Towards the detection of driver–pedestrian eye contact

چکیده
Non-verbal communication, such as eye contact between drivers and pedestrians, has been regarded one way to reduce accident risk. So far, studies have assumed rather than objectively measured the occurrence of contact. We address this research gap by developing an detection method testing it in indoor experiment with scripted driver–pedestrian interactions at a pedestrian crossing. Thirty participants acted either standing on imaginary curb or crossing one-lane road front stationary vehicle experimenter driver’s seat. In half trials, pedestrians were instructed make driver; other half, they prohibited from doing so. Both parties’ gaze was recorded using trackers. Eye contact detection in humans from birth.
Making eye contact is the most powerful mode of establishing a communicative link between humans. During their first year of life, infants learn rapidly that the looking behaviors of others conveys significant information. Two experiments were carried out to demonstrate special sensitivity to direct eye contact from birth. The first experiment tested the ability of 2- to 5-day-old newborns to d...

Eye contact does not facilitate detection in children with autism.
Eye contact is crucial in achieving social communication. Deviant patterns of eye contact behavior are found in individuals with autism, who suffer from severe social and communicative deficits. This study used a visual oddball paradigm to investigate whether children with high functioning autism have difficulty in detecting mutual gaze under experimental conditions. The results revealed that c...
متن کاملDriver Drowsiness Detection by Identification of Yawning and Eye Closure
Today most accidents are caused by drivers’ fatigue, drowsiness and losing attention on the road ahead. In this paper, a system is introduced, using RGB-D cameras to automatically identify drowsiness and give warning. In this system two important modules have been utilized simultaneously to identify the state of driver’s mouth and eyes for detecting drowsiness. At first, using the depth informa...
متن کامل[Non-contact measurement of eye movements in the detection of deception].
The effectiveness of detecting deception by measuring eye movements without making contact was investigated. A deception-detection protocol was used with two conditions based on the stimulus similarity to the critical image. Volunteer participants (N = 63) were randomly assigned to either the high or the low-similarity condition. They were randomly presented with critical and non-critical image...
